Nevis announces $273.17 million 2025 budget without stating currency

ContinuingOPENED 2025-01-03

The Nevis Island Administration announced a 2025 budget of $273.17 million on 3 January, presented by Premier Mark Brantley and described as balanced. The announcement states a single total. It does not state the currency of the figure, and it does not state a recurrent and capital split or a revenue side against which the balanced description could be checked. In the same period the Administration published a review of 2024 citing fiscal management as a success and asserting completed public works, without a project list distinguishing works completed in 2024 from works carried forward. The budget has not been passed by the Nevis Island Assembly, and no sitting, order paper, or Hansard record for this period appears in the material available to Newsful. As of 5 January no 2024 outturn figure for the Administration has been published in that material, no date is recorded for the most recent audited Nevis accounts, and no response from Nevis Island Assembly opposition members appears. Newsful has not recorded a reply attempt as of 5 January.

The announcement gives one total and no denomination. The Eastern Caribbean dollar and the United States dollar differ by a fixed factor of roughly 2.7, and Newsful does not infer a denomination from context.

The Nevis Island Administration's review of 2024, published in the same period, cites fiscal management as a success. No outturn figure accompanies that statement in the material available to Newsful.

What the announcement does not contain

  • A currency denomination for the $273.17 million total.
  • A recurrent and capital split, and a revenue side.
  • A 2024 outturn figure for the Administration.
  • A date for the most recent audited Nevis accounts.

Where the missing records would appear

The Estimates are laid before the Nevis Island Assembly, whose order paper and Hansard would record the sitting. Audited accounts appear in reports of the Office of the Director of Audit. As of 5 January neither record for this period appears in the material available to Newsful.

A prior commitment not in the summary

Premier Mark Brantley announced the establishment of Nevis's first dedicated dialysis centre at Alexandra Hospital on 23 July 2024. The funding line, cost, and completion status of that project do not appear in the budget summary available to Newsful.
