Nevis geothermal commitment follows a 2018 well at Hamilton Estate

The Caribbean Development Bank announced on 30 December a $17 million commitment through its GeoSmart Initiative toward geothermal production drilling on Nevis, referencing a 100 percent renewable generation target. Production drilling sinks wells to supply a generating plant. The announcement as recorded names no contractor, sets no disbursement schedule, and gives no date for first works. It does not state the currency of the figure, or whether the money arrives as a grant, a concessional loan, or a blend of the two.

As of 5 January, no environmental impact assessment, well location, or land tenure particulars have been published. The Nevis Island Administration announced a $273.17 million budget for 2025 on 3 January; no source states whether a counterpart sum toward the geothermal programme sits inside it. The St. Kitts Electricity Company separately invited expressions of interest on 2 January for engineering consultancy on an 18MW expansion at the Needsmust power plant. No source places that procurement beside the Bank's commitment. The Prime Minister's 1 January address named the Sustainable Island State agenda as the frame for 2025, according to the Saint Kitts and Nevis Information Service release carrying the text; no strategy document for that agenda has been identified in any source.

Wells have already been sunk into the Nevis resource. A technical paper by Stacey and co-authors, dated 18 March 2018 and published through mygeoenergynow.org, reports the N-4 exploratory well drilled on the Hamilton Estate to 3,154 feet measured depth. That paper records bottom-hole temperatures above 246 degrees Celsius and states that the well confirmed the presence of a commercial geothermal resource. Nevis Renewable Energy International carried out the drilling and the testing.

The precedent record prepared for this issue states that the 2018 test well confirmed the resource but was not followed by the promised power plant, leaving conversion of proven heat into public supply to later rounds of financing. No source in the material available to Newsful records a geothermal generating station operating on Nevis, and none gives a date on which one entered service. The Bank's announcement does not mention the 2018 well, its depth, its operator, or its result.

Stated structurally, the configuration is this: an exploratory well drilled and tested at a named estate, a confirmed resource with published temperatures, a stated renewable generation target, and a December 2024 finance commitment for production drilling that arrives without the earlier drilling record attached, without a named instrument type, and without a contractor. The 2018 result reached the public through a technical paper carrying depth, temperature, and date. The 30 December commitment reached the public through an announcement carrying a figure and a channel name. Six years and nine months separate the two documents.

Two dated records sit ahead in the ordinary process. Caribbean Development Bank procurement notices would name a drilling contractor for the Nevis programme; the Nevis Estimates 2025 would show any counterpart funding line.
